Full Membership Criteria

Membership is open to all individuals living in the UK and worldwide who have a connection to the village of Murray Town, Freetown, Sierra Leone, by birth, marriage, ancestry and residency. 

Officers and members at an ordinary general meeting may refuse an application for membership if, acting reasonably and properly, they consider it to be in the best interest of the association to refuse the application. 

Membership is not transferable to anyone else. 

Associate Membership Criteria

The charity trustees create associate membership and determine the rights and obligations of any such members and the conditions for admission to and termination of membership of any such class of members. 

References in the constitution to "members" and "membership" do not apply to non-voting members, and non-voting members do not qualify as members for any purpose under the Charities Act, General Regulations or Dissolution Regulations.

Associate Membership of Murray Town Association:

  • Is open to persons who do not qualify to be members of the Association by:     Birth, marriage, ancestry and residency. ​

  • Associate members should be committed to furthering the aims and objects of the Association through their support and actions.  ​

  • Members should be committed to act in accordance with the duties of members as set out in the constitution and to comply with the Code of Conduct and other policies. ​

  • Associate Members shall have most of the privileges of ordinary membership: 

    • The right to attend meetings, events of the Association, speak, present and support motions. They may fully participate in the running of the Association if they so wish.​

  • Associate Members can pay a reduced subscription with no voting rights and receive partial bereavement donation from the Association or pay full subscription with full voting rights and full benefits from the Association. ​

  • Ex-members could return as Associate Members on the condition their yearly subscription was paid upfront. ​

 Associate Members must: 

  1. Demonstrable close ties with the Murray Town community  

  2. Have a record of strong support for the Association and commitment to its aims and objectives. 

  3. Be sponsored and nominated by an existing member of the Association. 

  4. Have no known conflict of interest with the Association. (membership may be terminated if any such conflict of interest arises after membership has been granted). 

Limits of Associate Membership: 

Associate Members may not stand for election to any of the statutory offices of the Executive Committee and may also not become Trustees as defined in the Constitution. 

 

Procedure to become an Associate Member 

  1. Nomination to be filed by an existing member of the association who will be the sponsor, with a completed Associate Member Application Form submitted to the Secretary of the association, setting out how the nominee meets one or more of the criteria for Associate Membership. 

  2. Trustees/Executive members to review the application and present recommendations to accept or reject the nomination to members in a General Meeting. The member submitting the nomination (sponsor) may make a case for the recommendation.  

  3. It shall be an agenda item notified to members in advance. It is proposed that two-thirds of the votes by members at a properly constituted meeting should be required for approval of the Associate membership. 

  4. Approval letter to be sent to nominee and sponsor conferring Associate Membership  

  5. An induction pack to be presented to the nominee at the earliest possible opportunity.
